“Karapat-Dapat Nga Ba?” Or “My Disappointment Over Jun Lozada’s Visit to DLSC”

The most important revelation that transpired during that fateful Saturday’s “Symposium on Truth” (a.k.a. Jun Lozada’s visit to DLSC) was not that the corruption in our government is so foul that one can probably smell it all the way to the moon. We Filipinos have known this rancidity all along, or have pushed it to the back of our minds. But it’s always there: the burning suspicion of where our taxes really go. What Jun Lozada merely did was to “confirm” it (once again) so that it becomes imperative for us to be indignant (once again) or risk looking really bad to the rest of the world if we choose to continue living in denial (again and again).

It was not that Lozada has proven himself good at rhetoric; I praise him for his suave reference to the Bato-Balani Battle of the Bands backdrop (already set up on stage during mass) to predispose the audience to the rest of his speech. I challenge my students to practice the same technique and breeze through their speech courses.

It was not even his inspiring answers to the toughest questions thrown during the open forum (c/o Dodong). He denies claiming he was the nation’s “messiah.” On TV he has admitted, somehow, that only people in such dire straits as he is can do the same things he has done.

Therefore, the most important realization I had that fateful Saturday came to me during the

Student Council’s response to Jun Lozada’s call for vigilance for the sake of the youth.

The DLSC community had been at its most polite, most attentive mode all through out Lozada’s stint; but when the time came for SC representatives Mavic Agbisit and Cedric Viguilla to speak, Jun Lozada chose to turn a deaf ear. His actions ran counter to his words

when he chose to indulge the crowd, smile and strike poses for pictures, sign autographs,

“make

beso-beso” and “chika” all through out SC’s meticulously written position speech “Sa Panig ng Katotohanan.”

Only a few of us stood to the side, away from the noisy crowd, to listen to what the SC had to say. Pinaghirapan namin to, a member of the current SC remarked. Parang binabastos kami.

Hindi lang parang. Talagang. Another student replied. This, I thought, is the voice of the youth that Lozada referred to earlier as the nation’s inspiration in upholding social justice and truth.

So, to reiterate, the most important realization was that our society’s “starstruck” mentality has turned Jun Lozada into a “rockstar.” Look at how quickly his actions negate his flowery words; look at how happily he cavorts in the limelight. Look at what we have done to him: this man we had previously adored for what he has put on stake for “the truth.”

Now, would I trust a rockstar’s truth-claims? Yeah. Certainly. But if and only if they kick the bucket at 27.

Plans for Final Project

Guys, since we failed to talk clearly about our final project for compmed. I set up this site for our tutorials. Tutorials? with the S? Well, since we don't have so much time in our hands, and since natural things like the weather seemed to be stopping us from meeting. I propose this plan to you guys. I made a website in which we can all post the tutorials we can gather.

Me and Alex have already started posting. You guys can simply send me your how-to articles, videos and images @ penzie@gmail.com

For videos, please upload it to YouTube. It doesn't have to be fancy, use your webcam :) Oh yeah, if you are doing something big, we can still make a joint effort to make something big like a video. Just tell us your bright ideas and hopefully we can do it before the end of this term.

Good luck to all of us!

Oh, the website... well it's still dull: http://compmed.bravehost.com

It looks like it's for techie topics but don't get stuck there! ANY tutorial will do, it's just that the layout is still temporary. :)

For 17 July 2007

For next meeting we will discuss about children in cyberspace. I expect each one to be able to contribute to the discussion. Below are some guide questions which can prepare you for next week’s class.

Study Guide:

How pervasive is the internet? Provide statistics on the number of users? How does it influence (if at all) the children growing up today?

Compare the development of the internet to previous technological developments like that of the television or print? What advantages and disadvantages does it [pose to children in particular?

Do you agree to this statement: A technology is only as useful as the intentions of its users.

What processes and attributes shape the child/internet interface?

What is multitasking? Does multitasking affect the developing mind of children?

Some authors espouse that the internet blurs boundaries of other socio-cultural aspects of the internet (aside from e-commerce, of course). Expound on this.

What about the idea of the Internet being a democratizing force? Do you agree or disagree with this?

What are your thoughts on media consumption? Compare reality versus virtuality?

Do you think that this can be the next stage of evolution? Intelligent machines replacing human beings and human beings becoming more machine-like by downloading their consciousness into computers?

In some ways, the Internet mode of presentation is along the same lines as that of the television. But then again it presents some unique problems. Elaborate on this?

What is virtual reality? Do you think there will ever come a point wherein technology is perfected such that one would not be able to distinguish between virtual reality and reality?

What can you say about the concept of anonymity? Does it affect the moral sense of children?

What about intellectual development? How does the internet affect this? Some ideas and concepts related to these are digital learning, information glut, learning styles, and learning disabilities. What can you say to these?

Discussion for Tuesday

For Tuesday's discussion we will talk about digital literacy. You can read up on any resource regarding this topic. The following are some guide questions which can serve as a springboard for our discussion. They are:
1. What is your understanding of digital literacy? How do you define it? Ddoes it make use of a new medium? Characterize this medium.
2. When you talk of digital literacy, what is meant by the medium being "volatile?" As a case in point contrast a printed book with the digital medium. Comment on theidea of "intellectual property" in relation to this digital medium.
3. What does multimedia literacy do? What did it change in terms of Western cultural history?

The posts you have done so far are great reads! It reveals the personal styles and opinions of the members of the class both on academic concerns and other concerns as well. Comments, however, have been coming in trickles but I anticipate that you will get into the groove soon, and that we'll be seeing different threads emerging.

As a reminder, count your blog entries because by the end of this week, you are supposed to have 12 blogs and if you don't, you better start catching up. Remember it's three blog entries (on something discussed in class, on something else outside what we discussed in class and third, a comment on any of the blog entries of your classmates or a comment on their comment).

By the way, take note that you can also post your entries directly on virtual thoughts, this way your classmates get to see your entry at once. You can do this by going to the section entitled Contributors and then clicking on your name. This will allow you to make a post that will appear in our class blog (virtual thoughts).
